"Dearest gentle reader,” - Bridgerton
And the inspiration must continue... After looking over different film openings and seeing the aspects they include, I realized that credit sequence is one of the most important elements. Credit sequences are the next step in understanding the conventions of a film opening.
Some films I would like to discuss the credit sequences utilized are: Superman (1978), Mission Impossible - Fallout, and Gattaca.
1. Superman (1978)
Richard Donner's style in the film "Superman" brought a new aspect to the genre with its different font in the credit sequence as it adds to the heroic tone of the movie. At the beginning, it is set with a background that includes comics and then goes into the titles with the blue streaks of light that form into the names. The font and animation truly add another level to the film's opening sequence and follow that science fiction and dramatic theme. The font is also an important element in the graphics since it creates a sense of empowerment that will be shown later on in the film. This example gives the perspective of a film in which it is more about power and heroes in the story, yet it's a great example of the development of a credit sequence in the film's opening.
2. Gattaca (1997)
Gattaca's opening credits are a good portrayal of the sci-fi drama genre features. The opening's composition, colors, and video behind the credits elevate the opening. The background allows the audience to start getting hints about the film and seeing the dramatic element as it is in slow motion mixed with close-ups that allow the viewers to feel closer and immersed. One technique used was the revelation of certain letters within the names, it is said that the letters G, T, C, and A are the representation of the four types of DNA that will be shown later on in the film. After analyzing this opening and getting to learn about the technique to create foreshadowing and hinting important elements to the viewers. I enjoyed them and feel like I would like to try to implement similar techniques as it creates a unique and special connection between the film and the audience. This knowledge will help me later on as I work on developing the credit sequence for my film opening.3. Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)
Mission: Impossible - Fallout brings forth a different perspective on ideas for a credit sequence. The action aspect mixed with a little sci-fi creates a beautiful scene that demonstrates a fast-paced sequence that includes a vast majority of the content that will be revealed later in the film. The colors, graphics, and pace embody the tone of the film. The way that the credits were developed helps with the content that it is included, it has been stated that parts such as the flames are a way to interpret the intense feelings and threats going on in the atmosphere in which it was based.
After doing this research on possible credit sequences, has opened my eyes to different types of sequences that can be created. As my group and I develop the credit sequence, we will be keeping in mind what each of us has learned and adjust it to our opening.
